Englishman and real estate visionary, John Bateman Harcourt, settled first in Melbourne, Australia, before making his move to New Zealand’s newly established capital, Wellington, at the tender age of 21. It was here he purchased an established soft goods company in 1879, re-naming it ‘Harcourt and Co’.
